Integrated Medical Model
When the family finally got a diagnosis for Carling after a year and a half of searching, they also received the news that there was "no treatment, no cure, and a life expectancy of age nine." The only thing offered and available was anti-seizure medication and bereavement counselling. As sobering as that was, it was also a relief because this told the parents to look elsewhere for answers. This began their journey and search into alternative fields of health and began to assemble their expanded team. Over the years the family pursued a multitude of natural health treatments to keep their children as healthy as possible, while scientists worked to come up with a cure. This was the integrated medical model: where more traditionally Western (or Allopathic) medicine played a role, as did more Naturopathic treatments. This integrated model contributed to a healthier life for both Carling and Colton.
